Carrie Fussell of Calliope Musicals

Psychedelic pop is alive and well in the theatrical dance band Calliope Musicals, and lead singer Carrie Fussell embraces the motto to Keep Austin Weird through dancing around and throwing confetti onstage, testing the boundaries of ‘weirdness.’ Calliope Musicals is an Austin hometown favorite at South by Southwest, performing nine times at the March 2022 festival.

Offstage, Carrie is one half of the low-key songwriting collaboration between Fussell and singer/guitarist Matt Rothy. She sits down with Tom after one of her two performances at UTOPiAfest, sharing stories of love and creativity, and challenging what it means to be an artist.
